Spotify raising rates. DMV TV still free

DMV TV

And we’ve added a radio station too

While we do not have as many options as Spotify, we will continue to add more music and more videos as we build revenue within the company. At the same time, we are not exactly trying to be like Spotify, although their model is very intelligent in terms of building capital, profits and exposure for all artists in the world. We also offer films, shorts, documentaries and music videos. And DMV TV doesn’t charge artists to put music or films on our Platform, which reaches TV distribution.

The Scoop

Per CNBC:

Spotify announced on Monday it is increasing the cost of its premium subscription plans in the U.S., marking the Swedish music-streaming company’s second price hike in a year.

U.S. Spotify users will be notified about the new change to their subscription over the next month.

Shares of Spotify were up more than 4% Monday morning.

For users in the U.S., an “Individual” plan will cost $11.99. A “Duo” plan will cost $16.99, and a “Family” plan will cost $19.99. The “Student” plan will still cost $5.99.

Spotify said it is raising prices so the company can “continue to invest in and innovate on our product features,” according to a blog post.

In July 2023, Spotify increased the price of its Individual offering to $10.99. It also increased the prices of its Duo plan, Family plan and Student offering to $14.99, $16.99 and $5.99, respectively. The company said the market landscape has “continued to evolve” since Spotify launched, according to a release at the time.

Spotify competitor Apple Music increased the cost of its subscription in late 2022. An individual subscription starts at $10.99 a month, according to Apple’s website.”

Spotify’s starting to implement music videos too, but charges artists…

Sounds honest

But I guess what would be interesting to know is how the artists are benefiting from this price increase. Are they able to pay them more? I believe at the time of this article, Spotify rates are .003-.005 per view. DMV TV rates are .006-009 per view, and only monetized on 5 of the 9 platforms. We are looking to get all platforms monetized. Yes, we have only 280 videos so far, yet we’re always looking for ways to find revenue without ripping off the listener or the artist.

We pay more than Bandcamp at 90%

One of our strongest features to support artists is that we pay more than Bandcamp if you want to sell your music, merch or your films online. We pay our artist 90% which includes fees. We hold onto about 7% since 3% would be from the fees that we waive for artists. 7% doesn’t sound like a lot. But we are also not employed with hundreds of people like Spotify, Youtoobe or Bandcamp. The only songs we have at this moment are two albums that are original in the DMV. The first one is kid friendly and made by a video game artist/painter/musician who had extra music to share. We love it so much we decided to use his music specifically for the channel and for other themes of the network.

Planet Chorus is the theme song for DMV TV. Here is a taste.

You can buy the song or the entire album Digital Rasputin 2, for less than three dollars, including the artwork. Buy Digital Rasputin 2. The first Digital Rasputin album is free on DMV TV, in the experimental radio section.

If you are a fan of HomeGrown, the Semi Procast show on DMV TV, you may notice that since Ep. 3, in the beginning of each episode, starts with the beeps and boops, accompanied by music. This is from the D.R.2 Album. We will continue to use them for each episode.

This one was from HomeGrown, episode 5, Pain From a Stranger

And one more just for kicks

If you like what you hear, then please take a moment and get the albums to support our website, and to support the App. I myself am always a little apprehensive when buying music, or even bread at that matter. And a lot of us have been use to getting it for free for over 20 years. But I buy music, paintings and films nowadays. And you know what, there is this renewed satisfying feeling I get, when I buy art from artists. I’m supporting them by telling them they are valued, by displaying that their hard work is important to me, and I respect them for who they are and what visions they wanted to share to the world. And it’s just nice to own something nowadays. Especially in a world where everyone and everything is just on borrowed time.
